Solar PV Inspections

FlyThru operate high resolution thermal sensors to inspect varying assets where precise reporting of thermal anomalies is required.

Whether an investor in solar farms, a site operator, or engineer requiring accurate commissioning data it is essential to ensure your asset is performing at optimum capacity to maximise return. Solar arrays consist of multiple ‘strings’ of PV modules that are connected in series. One fault within a series of modules will reduce the output of the entire string, thus one faulty panel has a huge affect on generation output.

UAVs or drones provide a cost effective speedy and most importantly accurate solution when inspecting solar farms. Surveys must be undertaken at >600 W/m2 which typically requires direct sunlight – in the UK these are uncommon conditions which is why a drone survey is necessary, being x10 quicker than other surveying techniques, drones can cover multiple sites per day. The data we collect can be interrogated post flight and parameters adjusted to look for anomalies. The data can be observed live whilst on site if immediate action is required or we can provide post flight reports. 

Detailed reports are provided having reviewed the data on every single module and panel, helping to identify to owners and operators the location, fault type and recommended remedial actions for the anomalies detected.

Advantages of using UAV thermal inspections include:

  • Radiometric data recorded, allowing full post processing (most drone thermal cameras don’t allow this)
  • Finds faults that cannot be seen with naked eye, or easily tested with electrical instruments (e.g. PID, bypass diode)
  • Detects Bypass diode, hotspot (cell failure), string faults, combiner box fault, PID and inverter faults
  • Drone/UAV is much faster (x10) than surveying manually, covering large areas quickly vital in UK weather windows
  • Every single module is inspected and therefore provides a more detailed and accurate view of the operation
  • Increases health and safety, limiting fire risk
  • Saves time, money and increases return on investments
